When you consider what it actually has to do
That's considerably cheaper than some other equipment that they would otherwise call on for the same role.
Bear in mind its not the toy helicopter you picked up in that gadget shop in the high street.
This one flies outdoors, is stable enough to act as a video platform, is capable of securely transmitting that video back to the operator, is most certainly controlled using a secure radio protocol not line-of-sight infra-red, and does all this in the same size package as that helicopter you picked up in the high street.
That capability doesn't come cheap in a large package. To shrink it to that level is really bloody hard.

$25,000 each.
Or less, assuming the contract is for 4 million (160 units) and is POTENTIALLY for 30 million later on (according to this article). But that's making a lot of assumptions of course.

sorry about this but tonight at 23:20 sky arts 1, channel 281 on virgin, is showing an amazing accoustic Pixies gig. i was sceptical about an entire accoustic set but it's brilliant. also the last time they broadcast it there was not a single commercial break in the entire 90 minute set. that is all.
EDIT: you will however have to make your peace with the fact the festival it was at was sponsored by Dunkin' Donuts.

( , Tue 5 Feb 2013, 14:32, Share, Reply)
I think it's because by watching it you are supporting an empire which is hell-bent on reducing mainstream culture to its lowest common denominator.
There's a reason that Sky's arts coverage is untainted by Murdoch interference - it's not something he can reduce, repackage & re-sell.
( , Tue 5 Feb 2013, 14:46, Share, Reply)
er, i think mainstream culture has always sought to appeal to the lowest common denominator in the modern era. which is why i hate the BBC as their main prioity seems to chasing ratings by churning out shit like BBC 3's entire content, eastenders, strictly come prancing, radio 1 and 2, total wipeout, casualty, holby city, the voice etc etc. why should i subsidise that utter utter pony via a mandatory tax when it is more than adequately provided for by the commercial market? they are a state funded broadcaster and as such have obscene advantage over their commercial rivals, over-staffed and over-funded and spending their funds mainly on crap that is contrary to the very remit that granted their state funding. which they then repackage and re-sell through BBC worldwide in an attempt to foist their dumbed down shit on the rest of the world and make people like jeremy clarkson multi-millionaires
i went for a job at The Sun once. first interview lasted about an hour, the second an hour and a half, the third less than twenty minutes because i expressed similar views. who'd have thought it? i thought i'd be preaching to the choir.
( , Tue 5 Feb 2013, 15:13, Share, Reply)
I think the BBC is a different issue. Murdoch is intent on doing the above, the BBC is doing it out of fear and incompetence as well as perennial government pressure.
edit: at its best, the BBC is one of Europe's most important institutions, and its news services are the best in the world. Radios 1 & 2 are for a specific audience, just as R3,R4, 5live, 1xtra & 6music are. I would argue they each cater to their audiences excellently.
TV is where it lets itself down, as it is under constant external pressure (both real and perceived)to offer the dumb crap that its commercial rivals do, and also to find supplementary revenue streams, hence the distinctly distasteful influence of BBC Worldwide (the reason no season of Dr Who is allowed to leave the Daleks alone, and why there has to be constant new versions of them - BBC Worldwide controls all the merchandising and funds part of Dr Who's budget).
The biggest problem, however, is that most of its commissioning editors are Oxbridge clowns with no talent or instinct for what they do.
( , Tue 5 Feb 2013, 15:26, Share, Reply)
i don't think it's fear but i agree with incompetence. i think over-funding is a massive issue combined with a lack of creativity. ITV led the way with huge rating soap operas so the BBC followed, same with reality shows and new style 'talent' shows etc, simply for a share of the ratings. the DQF idea would be great, if they did it, because the ratings would follow, but they don't. they don't ask what would be good, they ask what will get ratings i.e. what's the lowest common denominator. why aren't the BBC producing any great dramas like HBO and the rest? maybe you're right, it is fear of not getting ratings, when the finally did get The Wire they scheduled it like utter twunts.
EDIT: i take issue with 'one of europe's most important institutions', when i lived in germany and later france i have no recollection whatsoever of any of the natives expressing any view on it at all, the frogs always bring up Mr Bean and Benny Hill, but they were ITV.
their news coverage has its failings IMHO, the line between reportage and editorialising is very fucking blurry at times.

I don't know what this is even supposed to be, something from 1982?
Very rude of them not to ask though, I bet they get a fair few pennies to do that and all.

I get the feeling that the audience here are just laughing to stop him from hurting them.
Gotta say, I love a bit of intelligent religion-bashing but this isn't it. Too much swears. To be fair, I only watched the first 3.5 minutes so he might have turned it all around at the end. Somehow, I doubt it though.

are visitors to the exhibition allowed to handle the artwork, or does he have to go round with each person doing it himself?

His other exhibitions seem to have just had some stretched out with pictures of them compressed next to them, they stretch a looooooong way.

The hardest part would be glueing all the paper together before carving out the block.
and that's just a tedious job.

There's a lot of very clever technical stuff going round, using fantastic inventive techniques to produce kinda average art.
Don't get me wrong I think this guy is very talented, and the way the pieces move is an excellent wrench to the brain, but the actual articles produced look a bit uninspired.

Not to take anything away from what he's done.
It's mighty impressive. Just the term 'genius' is banded around so much.
Nikola Tesla: yes. Man who spent a lot of time a crafting sculpture from paper layers: no. He's just very skilled and dedicated.

I generally hate narcissistic cunts like these but the routine was original enough to reduce the overall cuntishness significantly.
