As a parting comment a student said, today
"I may not come in tomorrow - I might have turned into rain"

So, this evening is all about being melodramatic and hyperbolic.

LOOK; it's only a new bloomin thread
Three guests check into a hotel room. The clerk says the bill is $30, so each guest pays $10. Later the clerk realizes the bill should only be $25. To rectify this, he gives the bellhop $5 to return to the guests. On the way to the room, the bellhop realizes that he cannot divide the money equally. As the guests didn't know the total of the revised bill, the bellhop decides to just give each guest $1 and keep $2 for himself.

Now that each of the guests has been given $1 back, each has paid $9, bringing the total paid to $27. The bellhop has $2. If the guests originally handed over $30, what happened to the remaining $1?

Sod your shit boat pictures.
Tell me stories about when you last embarrassed yourself. Or when you last had an awesome drive.
Or when you last saw shit pictures on the internet.

In otherwords, we've had an earthquake here. it was rubbish. Didn't even feel it here in the countryside.

Sod your singers and ball footers, this boat is an actual hero. In so far as some wood and stuff can be.
My office is on the ludicrously named Eel Pie Island in the Thames, next to a working shipyard.

And this here boat has been moored up for a day, and now brought up a slipway to have a propellor replaced. We all thought it was cool looking, but had no idea what it was. So we did some internet research.

Turns out that it's MTB-102. Yes, THE MTB-102! Say what?

Boat photo

It's a motor torpedo boat, powered by two V-12 Merlin engines, just like what the Spitfires had, and has an amazing history. It made eight crossings of the Channel during the Dunkirk evacuation and was one of the first boats back over during D-Day.

Here's what it looked like when it was out kicking Fritz's arse.

Old timey boat photo

It also carried Churchill and Eisenhower, and was in both the Queen's flotillas. It's the fastest Royal Navy vessel ever, apparently, and was in Steve McQueen's The Eagle Has Landed. It's the last surviving military vessel from Dunkirk.

All hail the megaboat!

Alt Q: Shut up and appreciate history!

the last couple weeks, across the rd from my house on the green
there's been a police gazebo up, complete with solitary bored copper, reading and pacing. this has taken the place of the usual mob of crackheads, dogs, dealers and other semi-conscious derelicts.

i finally got round to asking one copper what the deal was.
apparently the purpose of the gazebo and associated policeperson is to deter the crackheads from gathering. wherever there's crackheads and complaints, up it pops like some kind of womble-bearing toadstool.

this to me seems like shit lazy stat-wrangling. rather than one copper walking round from trouble spot to trouble spot going 'hey crackheads! knock it off and move on' then when they settle again, shooing them off again like flies off a picnic, they simply sit a copper down somewhere under a gazebo, on full pay, thereby ensuring that there are no crackheads there AT THAT TIME. in this case, they are ~200 yards away in a different park.
this is a fucking joke, isn't it? tell me why.

alt: this is a great idea isn't it? tell me how you intend to darwinise yourself.

alt alt: i'm working from home tomorrow. no question, just wanted you to picutre me sitting in front of my laptop, with my nuts hanging out the bottom of my dressing gown. sexy isn't it? you disgust me.

That went well.
So, in the last five or six hundred years, religion in this country has gone from being something you burn at the stake for to something you hold a bake sale for. Is this progress?

How will our society be perceived in five hundred years? Are we repeating the decline of the Roman empire?
